Bendigo Celebrates 40 Years

Sunday, 28 May 2017

Bendigo Orienteers was formed in January 1977 as Bendigo Bushwalking and Orienteering Club, and has now turned 40. To celebrate the club held a 40th Anniversary Event at Wildflower Drive on Saturday. There was a lot of retro Orienteering gear that had been pulled out of the cupboard, including the old Bendigo kit.

The event celebrated some aspects of 20th Century orienteering that hopefully are well and truly relegated into history. There were no SI sticks or other electronic devices in use. Instead, the event returned to the glories of punch cards and the joys of analogue timing. Start times were allocated at the start triangle by a friendly official and another determined your finish time as you crossed the finish line. There were 5 courses as usual set by Peter Searle, all themed around the number 40.

After the event everyone stayed on for afternoon tea and a very yummy Bendigo Orienteers birthday cake, created by upcoming cake maker Leisha Maggs. If you look at Bendigo Orienteers timeline video, , you can see many second helpings were had.
