News Items

1.    FTOOTP

Eureka challenge
Well done to MFR and Eureka for a fine program of events on the weekend.  Roch's remote finish was a good example of course setting using SI to full advantage.  Great work by the Nuggets paid off with good results.  It's nice to see the younger men moving up the results - relying on our older Nuggets is not a good long-term strategy if we want maintain a strong state team.

StreetO this Thursday at St Helena - no toilets
No toilets will available at the event start/finish on March 11th.

2010/11 Australian Sports Commission (ASC) Sports Leadership Grant for Women
These grants have successfully been applied for in past years by women orienteers to get subsidised travel to attend Level 2 and Level 3 coaching and controller training courses and to attend ASC Female Leadership workshops. Applications for the grants open Monday, 8 March 2010 - for more details please email the president.

2.    State Series results
Eureka Orienteers provided a true physical and navigational test over short distance courses on Sunday for State Series #1.  The event report, results and links to splits and route gadget analysis can be found here: http://www.vicorienteering.asn.au/?ItemID=5413
Rockhopper Trophy and Orienteer of the Year points will be published soon.

3.    National Orienteering League
The Victoria Nuggets competed in the SILVA National Orienteering League Round 1 races on home ground over the weekend.

Kathryn Ewels (Senior Elite Women) and Leon Keely (Junior Elite Men) had great starts with wins in race 1 against the best orienteers in Australia.

It was a great team effort, including a high place in the team's scoring for the Mixed Relay, due to a strong depth of runners from Victoria.

Victoria lead the Elite Women competition, and are equal second in the Elite Men.

4.    MTBO News
Summer MTBO Series #6 this Saturday, 13 March at Plenty Gorge
The final event for this year's Summer MTBO Series on a new map right in the Melbourne suburbs at Plenty, utilising the bushland trails on both sides of the Plenty River.

There are NO TOILETS at the start/assembly area, so please make your toilet stop somewhere before you get there.

Post event get together
As usual there will be the BBQ with sausages, cheese toasties and drinks available after the event with all donations going towards the Junior MTBO fund. As an extra encouragement to stay on with others after the event and celebrate the end of the Summer Series, Judy Hill has suggested to bring a cake or dessert to add to the BBQ fare. Hope to see you all there for another great evening.

The summer events are 75 minute "Score" events, which means you have 75 minutes to visit as many (or as few) of the 20 controls on the map as you like. Each control earns you 20 points. You choose which way you go and when you return. If you take longer than 75 minutes, heavy point penalties apply. There are group starts of 20 riders every 5 minutes from 6.00pm, so that everyone starts and finishes around the same time and there is plenty of opportunity to mix with other riders before and after the event.
Enter on the day by 5.45pm at the latest. Riders briefing at 5.50pm.
Entry fees: VOA members $10 adults, $5 juniors, $25 families. Non-members: $20 adults, $10 juniors, $50 families.
Directions: Plenty Gorge Reserve. Eastgate Drive, Plenty. Turn from Eastgate Dr into park access track. Melways 10 E/F10

. . . "As of now, we have 2 support persons (1 female and 1 male) , but it would be great if we can find another support person. You are right, it's gonna be quite taxing on my current support team of 2 persons as there are quite a no. of critical checkpoints and some of the checkpoints would require the support persons to hike about 5km in.
If you can find a support crew to help my team, it would be great. We are willing to pay for car rental (if any), petrol, food, help source and provide equipment if necessary?? Haven't thought about paying for his /her 'services' and time but personally, I am open to discuss. :)
Perhaps more importantly, this support person should communicate and work together with the current team of 2, so as to be more efficient in the support. We don't want to tire out the support crew as well!
While this could almost as tough on the support crew as the competitors think of the other spin offs. . .  Fresh air, stunning views, alpine starts, gourmet food etc
Anyone able to help support this keen group of adventurers please contact phil.robertson33@gmail.com  phone 0427540178
